Rainbow BRT is being developed as a high quality, customer-oriented public bus transport service. It is managed by Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd and developed with the support of Pune Municipal Corporation and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. Pune Traffic Police is providing the support for management of traffic for smooth operation of Rainbow BRT.

Bus Rapid Transit provides an integrated network of safer, faster, affordable and more efficient public transport. Dedicated lanes ensure that BRT buses are able to run efficiently and rapidly along their routes, helping passengers reach their destinations easily. Commuters can experience high quality BRT stations, level boarding facility, real time bus arrival information and voice announcements on Rainbow BRT.

Watch videos about Rainbow BRT at Rainbow YouTube Channel

Rainbow BRT is not about moving buses in a bus lane, but providing a comfortable, smart and high quality bus service for commuters.

  1. Congratulations Rainbow BRTS, PCMC and PMPML on the fabulous system you are running. It is becoming a pleasure to commute by bus.

Current BRT routes are relatively short and do not save a large amount of time and effort. Please work towards linking the BRT routes in PCMC and PMC as soon as possible as it would result in huge time savings. People who travel long distances across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad(PC) would set aside private cars and bikes and prefer buses then. The true impact of Rainbow BRTS on Pune and PC would be fully realised then.

  3. Kindly extend BRTS lane from Sangvi till Shivaji Nagar or University Circle. The buses will get around 25 kms of BRT track which they will be able to cover in a very short time.

COnsider introducing AC buses for Hinjewadi. The IT crowd would be willing to pay extra for good service.

  4. Please consider cutting some buses on Vajra 6 route to end at Pimple Sauadagar while coming from Hinjewadi. There are a huge number of IT professionals living in Pimple Saudagar, Wakad and the bus will get filled at these stops itself. This will reduce dead mileage and improve turnaround time for buses.

  5. Hi,

I had a long time back requested for options from you on why not start a brts route from Vishrantwadi to Pune station via deccan college and sangamwadi. This would ensure full infrastructure of existing brts is used more effectively as well as ensure vishrantwadi and other stops are connected to meridian, engineering college and rto. I am still wondering why you have not given it a thought as yet.

  6. Please start buses from Jagatap dairy side to Pune station via LeMeredian. All the buses to Pune station go from Sasoon Hospital. Many people work in offices at Tadiwala road, Boat Club road, Bund Garden road. Also there are many students from Wadia college. Ruby and Jehangir hospital in same area. For all these people coming from Pune station to this side of road is highly inconvenient. Even autodrivers don’t come to this side or charge more from pune station. Crossing the bridge and coming to this side is very inconvenient. Many people coming to office in this area would like to use BRT if it comes from LeMeredian side. Also strt some buses from Hinjewadi to Kharadi IT part via this Jagtap dairy, Aundh, RTO, Ruby Hospital, Bund garden, to Kharadi

  9. With Nashik Phata-Wakad route becoming operational, there is a significant increase in traffic in pimple saudagar area. Primarily due to increase signal timings.

    1. There are 4 BRTS routes joining at Sai chowk in pimple saudagar. Traffic here has become unbearable. Right now the buses are only going straight. In case they decide to take turns from the chowk in future, it will be utter chaos. All the junctions from Sangvi, Kalewadi phata, dange chowk are getting flyovers except this overcrowded junction. Are there any flyovers planned here? Any other contingency plans?
    2. Since there are back to back signals from shivar chowk and sai chowk now, the stretch between these two junctions is always jam on both sides. With rakshak chowk closing military road and spot 18 multiplex planned to be operational soon, the traffic is bound to increase further. What are the mitigation plans? Since the traffic increase is primarily due to BRT routes, I am asking the questions here. I am sure people planning BRT would have some long term plans to reduce traffic congestions.

    • PMPML,
Extend BRT infrastructure all the way till Hinjewadi Phase III,otherwise the Nashik Phata-Wakad corridor is of no use.Three whole lanes are left for a bus which arrives only once in 10-15min(It would have been understandable if bus frequency was similair to that of Aundh-Ravet corridor).
Plus I have never seen fully packed buses running on this corridor despite such upgraded BRT infrastructure.
With the inauguration of Wakad-Nashik Phata BRT,traffic jams have grown intolerable on the Jagtap Dairy-Kokane Chowk stretch.

      • So currently BRT planning does not consider its effect on traffic due to the system? Flyover is in the purview of PCMC, but impact of BRT on overall situation was never studied?

I assume while designing such a big project, mitigation plans for such issues are also designed. 4 BRT routes joining at one square and its effect on the traffic, have you ever wondered or seen what has happened there?

    • Thank you for your suggestions. The suggestion for route change is related to PMPML Traffic Dept and is communicated to them. However, the flexibility the BRT system provides is that you can take Vajra service from Mukai Chowk till Dange Chowk and then take the buses to various destinations from Dange Chowk BRT station itself. The suggestion for provision of parking space is related to the PCMC, and you may please contact the PCMC for this.

I will explain you with an example of Navi Mumbai Corporation they have stations build on local railway route and railways are running by indian rail but with the best coordination with corporation and indian rail they have build a good public service to people like parking beautiful stations etc. I know it just a start but still think positive on parking spaces near bus stop.

  12. Please install dustbins in the brt buses. There is a lot of dirtiness caused due to the conductors throwing the leftovers of the tickets here and there which causes a very disgusting and a very awkward look in the buses. Instead of feeling pride of the buses i feel ashamed. Also please teach some cleanliness norms to the drivers as well as conductors. They don’t feel guilty while dirtying the brt path or any other normal road by spitting tobacco or paan in their mouth. Just tell me then how would we would make Swachh Bharat a real success.

    • Aditya, thanks for drawing attention. It appears that a bus not fitted out for BRT operations was used. There may have been a breakdown with the allocated BRT bus and a decision may have been made so as to provide a bus to keep to the schedule and avoid inconvenience to passengers. We will check with the concerned depot and take corrective steps.

    • Warje to Kharadi Bus route will be one of the many bus routes which will ply on the Nagar Road BRT corridor as a BRT route. Similar to Sangamwadi-Vishrantwadi corridor, PMC has started to undertake the rectifications of stations on the Nagar Rd BRT corridor. Construction of one station which was pending due to land acquisition issues is also ongoing. The construction of a terminal at Wagholi also needs to be done. Nagar Rd corridor may be launched after these are done in some months’ time, and after undertaking trial runs and testing the corridor infrastructure for readiness.

    • I know creating infrastructure for BRTS is not the duty of PMPML,but consider the situation at hand.
A large amount of traffic jam upto Wakad Flyover Chowk(The Flyover built over NH4 for Hinjewadi traffic) has been reduced as PCMC has widened the road for BRT.
So this stretch of the road from Wakad chowk to Jagtap Dairy has heavy traffic, but its pretty much flowing as the road is wide.
The main traffic choke up occures after the Wakad Flyover from Hinjewadi-gaon chowk and onwards. But BRT is present only till Wakad Chowk so BRT buses will eventually get stuck in Hiinjewadi traffic again ruining the purpose and efficiency of BRT.
I am aware that BRT has been develop only till Wakad chowk due to jurisdictional issues,as Hinjewadi comes under MIDC and not PCMC.
But the true purpose of Nashik Phata-Hinjewadi corridor will only be served only if BRT is extended from Wakad Chowk all the way till phase3.
Hope PMPML,PCMC and MIDC are at least aware about this issue and are in the process of coming to a workable solution to it.
-A small observation from a citizen point of view.

      • This was my very first observation when i saw the plan of BRTS in its nascent stage…

I don’t know why involvement of MIDC and gram panchayat was not done very early on since giving a proper transport to people going to workplace should be a top priority and everyone how the lack of planning had made a complete mockery of the city…no BRTS/no metro.. still reying on old school 2 lanes for 3 lakh people…
what purpose would stopping the BRTS till wakad serve unless you cannot give last mile connectivity to people by public transport..
do you plan people to use the BRTs till wakad and then board PMC/PCMC buses or shared autos ?
just try to work on this last mile connectivity and see the cash registers ringing with revenues..
everyone would leave their personal car if the public transport is convenient and easy to get with planned and knows frequencey (every 5 minutes or so)

        Like

      • Tanay, Rohan – Thank you for the suggestion. This is a matter under discussion as it involves multiple agencies. The road beyond Wakad Flyover falls under the purview of MIDC and the width is limited to around 30 meters as compared to 45 meters on the BRT corridor section. A slew of measures need to be taken to sort out the congestion issues on this stretch, such as extension of BRT, terminal development at Hinjewadi, alternative road connectivity to Phase 3, increase of Metrozip bus fleet etc, along with local area improvements.

  22. Hi All,

In the vishrantwadi corridor, there are still many stops wherein the doors are always left open leaving the passengers leaning out dangerously to see if the bus is coming.
Additionally most of the contracted buses do not have any voice mentioning the next stop nor do they have the LED signage inside the bus running the way it should run.

Are we penalising the operators for not having the maintained as they should be?

Advertising inside the BRT stop is a good source of money, if not inside at least outside above the stop where the fiber glass is there, why are you not utilising this space?

The corridors walls are now dirty, why not utlise the walls as a source of advertising revenue in return to keep the corridor clean and pay off the poor guards manning the instersections. They have a responsibility that may cost their lives in terms of either being run over or being left breathless with the dust and exhaust smoke.

All these funds can be put to good use.

The other day near the station (maldhakka chowk) I happened to see a Vishrantwadi Hadapsar bus.
It had the rainbow logo on it, however I am unable to find the details of the timings or frequency and even the route details anywhere.
Could you please confirm if such a route exists and if so it’s details.

I also have a suggestion, why not route the Vishrantwadi station bus via sangamwadi, Pune RTO and then via maldhakka chowk or via Meridian.
The route until Sangamwadi is pretty neat and quick, also the route from RTO to Jehangir via Meridian too is empty. These buses should then be able to get to station more quickly and also ensure better utilisation of the existing BRT stops.

1.All the buses do not have working ITMS and electronic display, hence they cannot be viewed on the LCD display on bus stops.
2.The drivers of some buses(Specially on the route 115PHinjewadi-Pune Stn and 337Nigdi-Dhayri) keep the left side doors of the buses open during BRT which poses a serious threat to commuters inside the bus. Please rectify this problem as soon as possible,

Also i had observed that the buses are not stopping at the the gate number as mentioned in the LCD display(ie 1,2,3,4 as marked at each bus stop). But i have seen improvements on that issue in the past 2 days.

    • Thanks Sanadiip. Wardens Supervisor is taking corrective steps with the wardens’ team. The PCMC Electrical Dept is re-working the signalling system and there may have been some outages during the day requiring manual management of traffic.

  29. BRT on Aundh Ravet road is making complete mess of traffic in jagtapdairy cross road. Its taking 30 minutes to cross 0.5km of distance from Y junction to pimple saudagar. Is really worth to put 99% of the traffic on stake for 1% who travel by bus in this arra? I mean BRT is eating so much space and its only carries 50 ppl with not more than 4 buses in an hour. It could have been digestible if so much space was dedicated to a rail or metro like system but with current design its making traffic problem worser than worst

    • Thank you for the feedback. There are 11 routes currently operational in the Sangvi Kiwale corridor carrying over 3500 people per hour in a single direction. i.e. 3500 persons per lane, and the overall operations are structured such that there is one bus every two minutes or atleast 30 buses in an hour (and not four buses in an hour). In comparison a single carriageway lane used for personal motor vehicles can carry less than half the number of passengers carried by bus. Hence it is certainly not an equitable allocation of road space. Even in the current context 3 lanes per direction for regular motor vehicles is still provided along with the BRT lane. Please note that atleast 85000 passengers are using this corridor daily today. The purpose of the BRT is to make public transport a rapid and attractive option so that bike and car users can also ultimately shift to BRT. In fact, ridership of buses has already gone up by about 17% in the last one month. The signals are designed to give a separate phase for BRT buses as a larger number of people is traveling by BRT. However, the signal phase at Jagtap Dairy is being re-worked and your input is helpful.

  30. Please establish self ticketing kiosks at each bus stop as it is done in multiplexes. This will save the time of the commuters and it will also be a warning bell to all of them who try to travel free of cost without taking the ticket even if asked by the conductor.

    • Ticket booths have been installed in bus stations. PMPML is getting the e-ticketing system ready. This includes purchase of e-ticketing machines and development of the software. This is underway.

    • Breakdown removal vans are kept ready in strategic locations. The opposite side lane can be used for removal of a broken down bus (applicable on all corridors except NH4) . In Sanghvi Kiwale corridor, though the median exists between the two bus lanes all along from Sai Chowk till Tathawade Chowk, the median has been removed in certain locations at about every 500m so that if a bus breaks down it can be moved to this location for minor repairs. Preventive bus maintenance is done by operators (they are penalized by PMPML for breakdowns)

Nagar Rd corridor may be launched in 1-2 months’ time after undertaking trial runs and testing the corridor infrastructure for readiness.

  32. Please don’t disrupt pre-existing PMPML network when implementing BRT. Allow for a transition period with both options available to commuters. Please procure new buses or hire like done for Pune Bus Day if not enough buses available.

  33. Why don’t you use the white coloured buses in the brt fleets even if they the right side doors and they look even more attractive than the red coloured buses which are currently used?????.Also please instruct the drivers to keep the doors of the bus closed and switch on the ITMS en route.

    • Thank you Aditya for the suggestion and the feedback. The buses being used in the BRT corridors are newer and have been fitted with ITMS equipment. The drivers are being trained and monitored in the operation of the ITMS.

  35. Congratulations PCMC, Pune, BRTS team! Keep up the good work. I am sure we will get better with time.

    Some suggestions/questions:

    – How about branding the BRTS lines and the buses with color codes? e.g. Kiwale-Sangvi as Red, and Nigadi-Dapodi as blue, etc. That will make using BRTS more fun, especially for kids who can influence parents to take them on a BRT instead of a private vehicle. It would also make things easier for those less educated.

    – Any plans of running articulated buses on BRTS lanes during rush hours (May be in distant future on end-to-end BRT bus routes)?

    • Hadapsar-Swargate-Katraj is not functioning as a BRT as of now as the flyover work is currently on. The systems will be reworked once this is complete.
